TAEMIN Returns With ‘PHASE 1 : Soft Violence,’ Taking Greater Creative Control of His Solo Music

TAEMIN is entering a new phase of his solo career. The SHINee star returned on August 31 with his new project “PHASE 1 : Soft Violence,” an album built around the tension between beauty, love and something darker underneath.

The release arrives after a major year for TAEMIN, including his historic Coachella appearance, and gives fans one of his most personally involved solo projects yet.

What Does “Soft Violence” Mean?

The concept explores contradictions hidden inside things that appear beautiful or comforting. According to SBS, the album carries the idea that “beauty is sometimes cruel,” examining subtle fractures that can exist beneath familiar beauty.

TAEMIN has also described the project as exploring different forms of love — including romantic love — alongside emotions such as jealousy, criticism, sadness and pain.

TAEMIN Takes More Creative Control

One of the biggest stories behind the release is TAEMIN's involvement in the music itself.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, TAEMIN said this project reflects his thoughts and feelings more authentically than before. He received songwriting or composing credits across much of the project, marking another step in his evolution from idol performer to artist with greater control over his own musical identity.

“FLOAT” and “Gooey” Lead the Project

The release is led by two contrasting title tracks: “FLOAT” and “Gooey.”

“FLOAT” takes the softer side of the concept, pairing romantic pop textures with garage-style drum rhythms and analog instrumentation.

“Gooey,” meanwhile, moves toward a darker and more aggressive sound, giving the project two very different musical personalities.

Coachella Music Makes Its Way Onto the Album

The project also includes music TAEMIN introduced to fans during his 2026 Coachella performances.

Among the songs connected to that era is “Let Me Be The One,” which was first unveiled during his appearance at the festival. TAEMIN made history this year as the first Korean male K-pop soloist to appear on Coachella's official lineup with his own set.

The LiMiNaL World Tour Is Next

The comeback will soon move from streaming platforms to the stage.

TAEMIN is scheduled to begin his new LiMiNaL world tour with three concerts in Seoul beginning September 18.

After nearly two decades in K-pop, “Soft Violence” feels less like TAEMIN trying to reinvent himself and more like an artist becoming increasingly comfortable showing audiences exactly who he wants to be.
