Lee Chang-dong’s ‘Possible Love’ Competes for the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival

One of South Korea’s most acclaimed filmmakers is back on the international stage.

Director Lee Chang-dong has returned with “Possible Love,” his first feature film in eight years, bringing together a powerhouse Korean cast led by Jeon Do-yeon and Sol Kyung-gu.

Lee Chang-dong Returns After Eight Years

“Possible Love” marks Lee Chang-dong’s long-awaited return to feature filmmaking following his internationally acclaimed 2018 film “Burning.”

The new film has now reached one of world cinema’s biggest stages as it competes at the Venice International Film Festival.

Competing for Venice’s Golden Lion

“Possible Love” is part of the festival’s main competition, putting it in contention for the Golden Lion, Venice’s top prize.

The selection adds another major international festival appearance to Lee Chang-dong’s celebrated career.

A Major Korean Cast

The film brings together several of South Korea’s best-known actors, including Jeon Do-yeon, Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong.

Jeon Do-yeon and Sol Kyung-gu are particularly notable collaborators for Lee. Both previously appeared in the director’s acclaimed 2002 film “Oasis,” while Jeon later starred in his 2007 drama “Secret Sunshine.”

What Is “Possible Love” About?

The story centers on two married couples whose lives and relationships begin to intersect in unexpected ways.

Through those relationships, Lee once again explores intimate human emotions, personal choices and the contradictions hidden beneath ordinary life.

That character-focused approach has long been a defining element of his films, from “Peppermint Candy” and “Oasis” to “Secret Sunshine,” “Poetry” and “Burning.”

Another Major Moment for Korean Cinema

Korean films have become increasingly visible at the world’s leading film festivals, and Lee Chang-dong remains one of the country's most internationally respected directors.

His return with a Golden Lion contender therefore makes “Possible Love” one of the most closely watched Korean films of 2026.

With Jeon Do-yeon, Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong leading the cast, international attention surrounding the film is likely to continue well beyond Venice.

Can “Possible Love” Win the Golden Lion?

The final result remains to be seen, but simply returning to Venice's main competition puts Lee Chang-dong back at the center of the international film conversation.

For Korean movie fans, “Possible Love” is also something increasingly rare: a new feature from one of the filmmakers who helped establish modern Korean cinema's global reputation.
