Are you visiting Seoul for the first time?
Seoul can feel overwhelming when you first arrive. The city is huge, subway stations can be complicated, and popular neighborhoods may offer completely different experiences.
However, a few basic decisions can make your trip much easier. From getting out of the airport to choosing where to stay, here are the most important things first-time visitors should know before traveling to Seoul.
Plan Your Airport Transfer Before You Arrive
Most international visitors arrive at Incheon International Airport. From the airport, travelers can reach Seoul by airport railroad, airport limousine bus, taxi or private transfer.
The best option depends on your hotel location, luggage and arrival time.
- AREX train: Useful for travelers heading toward Seoul Station
- Airport limousine bus: Convenient when your hotel is near a bus stop
- Taxi: More comfortable for families or travelers with heavy luggage
- Private transfer: Helpful for large groups or late-night arrivals
Before leaving the airport, confirm your hotel address in both English and Korean. Showing the Korean address to a driver can make communication much easier.
Use a Transportation Card
Seoul’s subway and bus system is one of the easiest ways to travel around the city, but first-time visitors should prepare a transportation card before their first major outing.
A T-money card can be used on public transportation and is also accepted in many taxis and convenience stores. Depending on the length of your stay, visitors may also compare it with other tourist transportation options.
Keep your card topped up and remember to tap when entering and leaving the subway system. Transfers between buses and subways are also easier when you use a transportation card.
Choose Your Neighborhood Carefully
Seoul has many popular areas, but they are not interchangeable.
- Myeongdong: Good for shopping, cosmetics and convenient access to central attractions
- Hongdae: Known for youth culture, cafés, street performances and nightlife
- Insadong and Bukchon: Suitable for traditional culture, hanok streets and palaces
- Gangnam: Popular for shopping, restaurants, offices and modern city views
- Seongsu: Known for pop-up stores, cafés, fashion and creative spaces
- Jamsil: A practical choice for families, shopping and large entertainment attractions
For a first trip, staying near a subway station is usually more important than choosing the most famous neighborhood.
Do Not Try to See Everything in One Day
Seoul attractions are spread across a large metropolitan area. Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon, Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam on the same day may look possible on a map, but transportation and walking time can quickly become exhausting.
A better approach is to group places by area.
For example, visitors can combine Gyeongbokgung Palace, Bukchon and Insadong on one day. Myeongdong and Namsan can be another route, while Hongdae, Yeonnam-dong and Mangwon work well together.
Prepare the Right Travel Apps
International visitors should download navigation and translation tools before arriving. Naver Map and KakaoMap are commonly used for Korean addresses, subway routes and local businesses.
It is also useful to save your hotel address offline and take a screenshot of important reservations. Mobile service can become unreliable inside underground stations, so offline information can save time.
Keep Payment Options Flexible
Cards are widely used in Seoul, but visitors should still carry a small amount of Korean cash. Some small food stalls, markets or older local businesses may have different payment preferences.
Travelers should also check whether their overseas card charges foreign transaction fees. A prepaid travel card can be another option for visitors who want to manage spending without opening a Korean bank account.

Respect Local Etiquette
Seoul is welcoming to international visitors, but a few simple habits are appreciated. Stand on the right side of escalators, keep subway conversations quiet and avoid blocking station exits.
At restaurants, check whether ordering one dish per person is expected. In traditional neighborhoods, remember that many hanok areas are residential communities rather than open-air theme parks.
A Simple First-Day Plan
For your first day, keep the schedule simple:
- Arrive at the airport and travel to your hotel
- Buy or activate your transportation card
- Explore the neighborhood near your hotel
- Visit one nearby attraction
- Save a larger sightseeing route for the following day
Seoul offers palaces, shopping, cafés, food markets, K-pop locations and modern architecture. The best first trip is not the one with the most stops. It is the one that gives you enough time to enjoy each area.
