K-Beauty has officially reached one of its biggest global milestones yet. South Korea exported a record $11.4 billion worth of cosmetics in 2025, moving past the United States to become the world's second-largest cosmetics exporter.
What makes the story even more interesting is that the boom is not being driven only by a handful of giant beauty companies. Smaller Korean skincare and cosmetics brands are accounting for a rapidly growing share of exports — helping turn K-Beauty from a social-media trend into a major global industry.
🇰🇷 Korea Moves Up to No. 2 in the World
According to South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korean cosmetics exports reached approximately $11.4 billion in 2025, up 11.8% from 2024.
That growth moved South Korea from third place to second place globally among cosmetics exporters, surpassing the United States.
The United States was also the largest individual destination for Korean cosmetics, receiving approximately $2.2 billion in exports. China followed at roughly $2.0 billion, while Japan ranked third at around $1.1 billion.
The figures show how dramatically the global market for Korean beauty has changed. Only a few years ago, many Korean products were mainly purchased through specialty online retailers or brought back from trips to Korea. Today, Korean skincare brands are increasingly available through major U.S. and international retailers.
🔥 Smaller Korean Brands Are Driving the Growth
One of the biggest reasons behind K-Beauty's expansion is the rise of small and medium-sized Korean companies.
In 2023, these companies accounted for about 63.6% of Korean cosmetics exports, worth approximately $5.4 billion.
By 2025, that share had grown to 72.5%, representing roughly $8.3 billion in exports.
That helps explain why international beauty shoppers are seeing so many new Korean brands appear in a relatively short period of time.
Instead of one or two dominant names controlling the market, K-Beauty continues to produce smaller brands built around specific ingredients, minimalist routines, skin-barrier care, hydration and highly targeted skincare concerns.
💧 Why Korean Skincare Keeps Winning Fans
Korean skincare has developed a strong global reputation for combining relatively accessible pricing with innovative formulations and visually appealing products.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica, ceramides, peptides and fermented extracts have become increasingly familiar to international shoppers partly because of their popularity in Korean products.
The global spread of Korean entertainment has also played a role. K-pop idols, K-drama actors, Korean makeup trends and beauty-focused social media content have given international consumers constant exposure to Korean beauty routines and products.
That cultural connection makes K-Beauty different from a typical cosmetics export story. Beauty has increasingly become another part of the broader Korean Wave, alongside music, television, food and fashion.
✨ Seoul Beauty Week Reaches Record Size
The industry's growth was also visible at the fifth Seoul Beauty Week, held from August 22 through August 25 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul.
A record 152 companies participated in the 2026 event, making it the largest Seoul Beauty Week so far.
The event expanded beyond traditional cosmetics to include beauty technology, medical aesthetics, beauty services, inner beauty and lifestyle products.
For smaller Korean brands, Seoul Beauty Week serves an important business role. Companies can meet directly with overseas buyers, distributors and investors, giving emerging brands a path into markets that may otherwise be difficult to enter.
Seoul officials said participating companies would have opportunities for one-on-one export consultations and meetings with 115 global buyers.
🤖 K-Beauty 2.0: AI, Beauty Tech and Personalization
The next phase of Korean beauty may extend far beyond traditional creams, serums and makeup.
The first-ever Seoul Beauty Forum focused on what organizers describe as the next phase of K-Beauty, including artificial intelligence, beauty technology, international certifications and global distribution strategies.
AI-powered skin analysis, personalized product recommendations and new beauty-tech devices could become increasingly important parts of the industry.
If that happens, Korea may be able to export not only beauty products, but also the technology and retail experiences surrounding them.
🌎 Why This Milestone Matters
The significance of Korea becoming the world's second-largest cosmetics exporter goes beyond another international ranking.
It shows how much the Korean Wave has broadened.
For years, global attention focused primarily on K-pop and Korean television. Now Korean skincare, makeup, fashion, food and lifestyle products are increasingly becoming major international industries of their own.
And perhaps the most important statistic is not the $11.4 billion export total. It is the fact that 72.5% of those exports came from small and medium-sized companies.
That suggests there may still be many Korean beauty brands capable of becoming the next major global success story.
